Table service
You're seated, a server takes your order, and you pay at the end. Disney World has table-service restaurants in every park, at most Disney Resort hotels and at Disney Springs[12]. Disney strongly recommends a reservation for in-park table service, and every guest needs park admission (and a park reservation if their ticket requires one) to eat inside a park[1].
Tip: A sit-down lunch is a real break in the middle of a hot park day. Plan for it to take a while.
Quick service
You order at a counter or cafeteria line, pay, then find a seat. Lounges and quick-service restaurants don't take reservations[1]. At most quick-service spots you can skip the register with Mobile Order[12].
Character dining
Disney characters visit your table during a buffet, family-style or prix fixe meal. At Disney World you'll find it in all four parks and at several Resort hotels, like Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fare, Cape May Cafe, Topolino's Terrace and Story Book Dining at Artist Point. Many take reservations up to 60 days out. You need park admission for the in-park ones, and Disney says to plan about 60–90 minutes. Characters and menus can change[11].
Tip: Hotel character meals don't use up park time, so they're a good fit for arrival or departure day.
Signature & fine dining
This is Disney's upscale tier. At Resort-hotel Signature restaurants, Disney asks guests to dress to match the setting, and swimwear isn't allowed. On the Dining Plan a Signature meal counts as 2 table-service credits per person[12]. A few top-tier experiences, including Victoria & Albert's, Monsieur Paul and Takumi-Tei, have earlier cancellation deadlines or higher fees[3].
Dinner shows & dining packages
Dinner shows need a reservation and cost 2 table-service credits on the Dining Plan[12]. The Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and the fireworks dining packages have their own stricter cancellation rules[3].
Universal Orlando
You book Universal's table-service restaurants one at a time from Universal's dining reservations page[8]. Universal's park FAQ reportedly says full-service restaurants in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure take reservations up to 180 days ahead Unverified[7]. We saw that in a search snippet but couldn't load the official page to confirm it, so check before you plan around it. Epic Universe and CityWalk may use different windows.
